Behind the scenes: Installing a crane at intu Broadmarsh
Crane for the construction of intu Broadmarsh

It's exciting to see the crane in place as works on intu Broadmarsh begin in earnest.

A crane this size came on a whopping 30 trucks, and needed two smaller cranes to assemble it.

The arrival of the crane was a complicated logistical exercise and was always going to cause traffic issues, but with careful planning and on-the-day assistance, disruption was mitigated as much as possible.

Building cycle confidence and getting back on the bike

Cllr Williams attending a community cycle centre
Blog by Cllr Adele Williams:

"There are two main reasons that people dont think cycling is for them. Either they dont feel safe cycling in close proximity to cars, or they lack the confidence to consider this a transport option. We are working to improve both, by building better cycle infrastructure and working with communities to support people to get on a bike.

"I recently got back into cycling after a few years out of the saddle, and understand that it can be daunting - even if youre an experienced cyclist. Thats why its so great that groups like Ridewise are working with communities to help people build the skills and confidence to make cycling a viable transport option. We want people to view cycling not as a recreational activity or something reserved for people in head-to-toe Lycra, but as a way to do the school run, get to work or visit friends.

"Through fostering a culture of cycling and building good, off-road cycle routes we can make a real difference to how people travel around the city."

Nottingham leading the way in greener innovative transport planning
Transport for London's Heidi Alexander meets Cllr Williams and Cllr Edwards

Transport for London (TfL)'s Heidi Alexander visited the city to find out how Nottingham is bucking the national trend and seeing an increase in public transport usage.

Many areas of the UK are now looking to follow Nottinghams example and introduce a Workplace Parking Levy (WPL) to help boost public transport usage, fight congestion and improve air quality.

Cllr Adele Williams said, London has some of the best public transport in the world, and the fact that TfL are looking to us for inspiration is a testament to the long-term transport plan for Nottingham. With declining funds coming from central Government, cities need to rethink how they can continue to support growth and combat congestion and climate change."

Try a bus day
People taking part in try a bus day

Everyone deserves to have equal opportunities when it comes to accessing public transport. That's why in Nottingham, we like to do the best we can to make sure that everyone feels safe and confident enough to use the public transport that the city has to offer. This makes days like "try a bus day" even more important to our citizens living with disabilities, and why this event proved very popular.

During the day, NCT accompanied us in a new biogas bus to travel to groups across the city. The bus was so new that it had not even entered into service yet! Among those who attended were students from Nottingham College and groups from My Sight Nottinghamshire and Mencap.
