Perspective on Apple's decisions this month, insight on how we get through hard weeks, and highlighting Love146's interview in "The Guardian."

THIS MONTH AT

John,
For many of us, (even those who don’t work at Love146), the past month has been a flurry of heavy news. But we're popping by your inbox to let you know some good news: you are helping to end child trafficking.

Recently, Jennifer Franz, our Senior Director of Operations & Human Resources, shared some reflections on what was getting her through a difficult week.

Philip Ishola, CEO of Love146 in the UK, recently spoke to The Guardian national newspaper about the children fleeing Afghanistan and seeking asylum in the UK. Numerous governments across the world pledging to help these young asylum seekers. However, in many situations, including the UK, basic needs are not being met, children are left in limbo, and danger is persisting.

Recently, Apple announced, and then pulled back, their plan to introduce software that would allow them to scan user photos for child exploitation images.

At Love146, we know that the number of child exploitation images online is abhorrent, and that tech companies have failed to adequately address this issue on their platforms and devices. We get asked a lot where the “hotspots” of trafficking are, and we regularly hear folks talking about how their city is a “major hub.” However, the reality is trafficking occurs wherever there are people. If you looked at a map of trafficking referrals, major highways, and human population density, you’d find they are often closely aligned. Where there are more people, more children are likely being exploited.

Child trafficking is happening in your region, but there are a lot of potential myths wrapped up in the perception that you live in a "major hub" of human trafficking.

Love146 is a part of the federal government’s National Advisory Committee (NAC) on the Sex Trafficking of Children and Youth in the United States. This is a group that brings together experts from diverse perspectives addressing domestic minor sex trafficking. The Committee was appointed by President Obama and launched in 2017, under President Trump, and is continuing to advise the Biden administration. Last year, the committee published a major report containing127 best practices for all 50 states ([link removed]) in ending child sex trafficking, and they’re continuing to apply pressure to governors towards implementing these recommendations.

Students are returning to uncertainty and challenges due to the pandemic. But on top of this, “Back to School” means even more when your education was interrupted by exploitation and trafficking. For children in our Survivor Care, re-engaging with school is like trying to climb a hill while carrying a heavy weight. As youth in Survivor Care are going back to school, your support helps ensure that the weight of exploitation and recovery doesn’t hold them back.

Real “awareness” of child trafficking isn’t just knowing it exists - it means being able to truly see it if it were to cross your path. If we’re acquainted with the issue of trafficking by stereotypes and hype, the reality can be harder to see. To end child trafficking, it’s important to know the red flags and vulnerabilities, and who to call for help. Educate yourself and others by reading our recent blog post on vulnerabilities, red flags, and signs of child trafficking.

We’re invited into juvenile detention centers several times a year. We go to speak with young people about human trafficking — and we work with them understand their vulnerabilities, and work with them to build skills that will help them navigate difficult situations.

In this recent story from the field, hear about how we approach the conversation about self-image. A need to belong, figuring out who we are in the world, and wanting to be genuinely loved are common struggles that are important to address, especially when it comes to human trafficking.
