| | Critical Progress on Federal Advocacy! |
| |
|
| NPH's number one federal priority, the expansion of the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act (AHCIA), has made it into the Build Back Better reconciliation legislation! Earlier this week, the House Ways and Means Committee released its draft of the Infrastructure Financing and Community Development portion of the Build Back Better reconciliation legislation, which includes expansion of the AHCIA. In particular, we've achieved inclusion of two critical provisions: a 60% allocation increase and reduction of the bond-financing threshold from 50% to 25% for seven years. NPH and our members and partners worked diligently to push for the inclusion of these provisions in the federal infrastructure package, which will help finance hundreds of thousands of homes in California and throughout the country. Stay tuned for the next phases of NPH's federal advocacy to ensure that these provisions remain in the final reconciliation package. |

| | NPH Supports Transparency for Bay Area Housing Elements |
| |
|
| Early this month, a group of affordable housing stakeholders, including many NPH members, released a letter urging Bay Area Planning Directors that cities and counties comply with Housing Element law, namely by implementing comprehensive, inclusive, and detailed public engagement processes. The Housing Element law determines the number and type of housing units needed to house all residents (present/future) at all income levels in each local jurisdiction. Every 8 years, the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) reviews local governments to see if they are in compliance with Housing Elements. Learn more and read the letter. |

| | Updates to CA Housing Partnership's Housing Needs Dashboard |
| |
|
| The California Housing Partnership recently upgraded their interactive online Housing Needs Dashboard. First introduced last year, the Dashboard shows affordable housing need in every California county, funding levels for affordable housing, and more. The updated version includes new indicators, data and functionality such as: - Data by region of CA (SoCal, Central Coast, Greater Sacramento, Bay Area, etc.)
- Cost Burden by Race and Ethnicity
- Housing for Unsheltered Persons
- Quarterly Historical Asking Rents (formerly annual)
- Historical LIHTC Production and Preservation
These upgrades to the dashboard help us to see and identify how systemic racism is interwoven in our current housing crisis. |

| |
|
| The Shift the Bay Initiative is offering two upcoming learning opportunities: - Narrative Strategy & You, Wednesday, September 29 (12pm - 2pm) and Wednesday, October 20 (12pm - 2pm)
In this virtual workshop with two options to attend, renowned national expert (and long-time Shift the Bay partner) Dr. Tiffany Manuel and her CaseMade colleagues will guide participants through an interactive workshop, examining specific campaign examples, reviewing big picture guidance that we can all organize under, and facilitating constructive peer learning. - Opinion Pieces (op-eds, LTEs, ed board memos), Wednesday, OCtober 13 (1pm-3pm)
Join us with M+R Communcations to explore: Do you know when you should write each kind of opinion piece? What are the elements and structure of a good op-ed? How can you increase your chances of it being published? And once you're done drafting, where and how do you submit it to media outlets? |
