| Friend, As you know, the overdose crisis is raging. Last year, drug overdose deaths in the U.S. increased by more than 30%, killing close to 100,000 people — the highest number ever on record. The U.S. House of Representatives took an important step toward overdose prevention by passing an FY22 spending bill that included historic and critical funding for syringe services programs. Now it’s time to convince the Senate — which is considering its spending bills now — to do the same. Urge your Senators to include funding for syringe services programs in its FY22 appropriations bill. Syringe services and harm reduction programs are proven to prevent overdose deaths and also connect people to medical care and support, including substance use disorder treatment. However, many of these essential services have experienced or expect budget cuts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Congress can and must act now to save lives: tell your Senators to fund syringe services programs. To curb the overdose crisis, drug use must be treated as a health issue instead of a crime. With your support, let’s make sure Congress takes a step in that direction by investing in life-saving overdose prevention and syringe services programs.
