There are breaking developments in the fight to save our democracy from the attacks it has endured from far-right lawmakers across the country.
Democratic senators have been working behind the scenes to refine the For the People Act -- to increase its chance of passage while maintaining the vital reforms essential to protecting the vote and saving our democracy. Yesterday, Senator Joe Manchin and several of his colleagues introduced the Freedom to Vote Act, a bill that does just that. Passing this bill would be a monumental step forward for our democracy and the American people.
Cosponsored by some of the Senate’s most vocal champions in the fight for voting rights, like Senators Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), this bill represents a watershed moment that will counteract the rising tide of voter suppression, prevent partisan gerrymandering, and help stop billionaires from buying our elections.
AND Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has committed to bringing this bill to a vote NEXT WEEK!
NOW is the moment for the Senate to act to save our democracy and do so with the urgency the situation requires:
- Far-right lawmakers in dozens of states across the country have introduced legislation that seeks to restrict the right to vote – with pivotal states like Georgia and Texas passing some of the most restrictive!
- Bad-faith partisan actors are preparing to redraw congressional districts ahead of the midterm elections – attempting to gerrymander their way to victory and jeopardizing the Democratic majorities in Congress!
- And big money groups are already funneling millions of dollars to campaigns that would undermine the progress of the past year in order to uphold the values of Trumpism and the regressive politics that comes along with it.
We’ve fought long and hard to get to this point and with Sen. Schumer’s pledge to hold a vote on this truly historic bill we cannot afford to let up now.
Join me in calling on the Senate to do the right thing and pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
