JMC's Constitution Day Initiative
JMC Makes the Most of the Constitution Day Congressional Mandate
On September 17, 1787, thirty-nine delegates of the Constitutional Convention signed the final draft of the United States Constitution. This historic day marks the beginning of American citizenship and the ongoing endeavor to form a "more perfect union".
In 2004, Congress designated September 17th "Constitution Day" and mandated that all federal employees and all schools receiving federal funds to hold a Constitution Day event. Many schools, however, do not have the interest to allocate enough resources for a substantive program.
It became a JMC goal to help our partner professors and other educators produce exciting events about the U.S. Constitution that would engage students all around the school. Thanks to a lead gift from the Andrea Waitt Carlton Family Foundation, JMC launched our Constitution Day Initiative in 2011.
Each September, we distribute thousands of pocket-sized copies of the Declaration and Constitution for students, and we sponsor guest speakers, debates, and other special events on campuses around the country that engage students in learning about our founding documents.
These events are an important part of our mission to improve civic literacy and encourage young people to learn and understand the vision in our Declaration and the role of our Constitution in realizing that vision.
Constitution Day events and celebrations are happening all month! Check JMC's Twitter profile for upcoming events, many of which are virtual and open to the public. Or visit our Constitution Day webpage to peruse the list!

The battle for the soul of our nation will be won or lost in our classrooms ™ — Jack Miller
Our history shows we did not always live up to the ideals enshrined in our founding documents. But the way forward is for our citizens to appreciate those ideals, recognize our failures and successes in upholding them, and continue to carry those principles forward. And that is why we believe education is so important.
The Jack Miller Center works to revitalize education in America’s history and its founding principles. Our goal is that every student learns the ideas that informed the founding of our nation so that they may preserve our freedoms for future generations.
Consider a tax-deductible gift to the Jack Miller Center. Your donation, large or small, is an investment in the future of our country—for you, for your children, for your grandchildren.

The Jack Miller Center is a 501(c)(3) public charity with the mission to reinvigorate education in America's founding principles and history. We work to advance the teaching and study of America's history, its political and economic institutions, and the central principles, ideas and issues arising from the American and Western traditions—all of which continue to animate our national life.
We support professors and educators through programs, resources, fellowships and more to help them teach our nation's students.
