JMC Makes the Most of the Constitution Day Congressional Mandate

On September 17, 1787, thirty-nine delegates of the Constitutional Convention signed the final draft of the United States Constitution. This historic day marks the beginning of American citizenship and the ongoing endeavor to form a "more perfect union".

|
In 2004, Congress designated September 17th "Constitution Day" and mandated that all federal employees and all schools receiving federal funds to hold a Constitution Day event. Many schools, however, do not have the interest to allocate enough resources for a substantive program.
It became a JMC goal to help our partner professors and other educators produce exciting events about the U.S. Constitution that would engage students all around the school. Thanks to a lead gift from the Andrea Waitt Carlton Family Foundation, JMC launched our Constitution Day Initiative in 2011.

Each September, we distribute thousands of pocket-sized copies of the Declaration and Constitution for students, and we sponsor guest speakers, debates, and other special events on campuses around the country that engage students in learning about our founding documents.
|
|
|
These events are an important part of our mission to improve civic literacy and encourage young people to learn and understand the vision in our Declaration and the role of our Constitution in realizing that vision.

On September 15, 2021, join the Center for American Studies at Christopher Newport University, a JMC partner program, for a live-streamed event commemorating the 20th anniversary of September 11.

Political Scientists John Agresto (JMC Board member and author of Mugged by Reality: The Liberation of Iraq and the Failure of Good Intentions) and James R. Harrigan (former Dean of the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani) will deliver remarks on the lessons learned, and forgotten, in the United States’s involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.
