Dear Friend, This past Friday, following a full slate of meetings with officials, SAM co-founder and former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy met with parents and other advocates in Denver to share a simple truth: today’s high potency marijuana is harming our youth and leading many down a road full of addiction, mental illness, and a litany of other potential harms to health and safety. One poignant story was that of our friend’s, Laura Stack. Laura has been a friend of SAM’s since she started her brave journey in this field after her son, Johnny, died by suicide induced by high potency marijuana. And they did this outside of one of the busiest pot shops in downtown Denver. Check out some of the photos from the event below: As we know, and as was reiterated this week by the head of the National Institute on Drug Abuse Dr. Nora Volkow — in a pot industry-sponsored newsletter, no less — marijuana commercialization is leading to massive increases in heavy use among young people. And as we know from recent data out of Colorado, young people are increasing their use of high potency concentrates such as vapes and dabs at an alarming rate. What's more, a study out yesterday found marijuana use in youth rising when comparing a legal state with an illegal one. This is untenable, and we must do everything in our power to stop the spread of the commercial marijuana industry. We have been on the front line of the fight to implement potency caps and other commonsense reforms in Colorado, and have been actively consulting with leaders in other states such as Montana and South Dakota to greatly restrict the pot industry’s ability to push through its addiction-for-profit agenda unencumbered.
