Senate Democrats and Senator Joe Manchin are making good on their promise to the American people to strengthen and protect voting rights with their updated voter protection legislation. There is an urgent need to get a bill to President Biden's desk for his signature, and Senate Democrats must act swiftly to make it happen.
America is facing a moment of decision. We are faced with a whole range of strategies designed to suppress the voice of the people and subvert our democracy -- voter suppression bills, big lies, and insurrection among them. The next step in the Republicans' plan is to gerrymander themselves into, as they have stated, "a decade of power." Those who have supported voter suppression efforts today will try to gerrymander themselves into power tomorrow. All of this is simply an attempt to maintain and expand the illegitimate power now possessed by those who value partisan gain over equality and justice.
This proposed compromise bill is the best chance we have to stop this attack on American democracy -- by banning partisan gerrymandering, protecting the right to vote, and returning power back to the people, where it belongs.
