John -- I’m writing today to give you a quick read-out on the state of redistricting. There are a number of states you should have on your radar this week. Here are a few:
Ohio: Republicans introduced gerrymandered state legislative maps that are worse than the current maps. The state’s redistricting commission is stacked with Republicans like Governor DeWine and Secretary of State LaRose -- who notoriously botched election logistics last year. Unsurprisingly, they moved forward to consider this gerrymandered map on a partisan 5-2 vote. Now, the same group of folks will likely vote to adopt a map later this week.
Texas: The House Redistricting Committee is holding public hearings this week before the state legislature goes into a special session next week. With the recent anti-voting rights bill passed by the Texas State Legislature, we do not expect these map drawers to be champions of fair maps. Keep an eye on this state -- Governor Abbott could be signing maps into law as soon as just a few weeks from today.
Colorado: This is the first time that Colorado is drawing maps via independent redistricting commissions. It was one of the first states to release draft maps, and we expect the congressional maps to be passed by the end of the month.
In Ohio, Texas, and Colorado, All On The Line has already turned out hundreds of folks to testify in front of map drawers -- whether they are commissions or lawmakers. Donate now to help fund our work or read on to see what’s happening in other states.
Nebraska: Nebraska’s recently released draft maps are, not surprisingly, gerrymandered -- the initial plan Republicans unveiled split Omaha. The map was even called out by a former GOP governor of the state! Nebraska will likely finalize its maps this month.
New York: Be on the lookout -- New York is expected to release their draft maps tomorrow!
In some states, we’re facing a massive multi-level effort to manipulate maps and secure years of conservative power -- like in Ohio where the draft legislative maps give Republicans a 2:1 advantage even though voters split their votes between the parties more closely to 55/45 over the past decade.
We are in the map drawing phase of redistricting, and efforts to gerrymander some districts are already in full force. Will you chip in to support All On The Line’s work to end map manipulation and achieve fair maps?
