Message From Our Executive Director

Dear John

So many exciting things are happening at Washington Trafficking Prevention ([link removed]) ! We have been reviewing local and national research on the changes of exploitation during the pandemic - sadly, child trafficking and luring have been dramatically rising locally and in other states. Last year King County saw a 162.5% increase of child trafficking.

As a result, many families need our support now more than ever.
We are partnering closely with local agencies to ensure that providers and teachers are equipped to recognize the signs of exploitation and have protocols to respond. Through these partnerships we are hosting more trainings and awareness events to prevent trafficking locally.

I'm excited to share that our organization will be the landing page for Pierce County's upcoming human trafficking awareness campaign! We are so excited and grateful for this partnership and know that our work will help survivors locally connect to resources, and better equip the community to prevent and respond to human trafficking.

We are making an even BIGGER impact this year! Will you support our mission to prevent human trafficking in Washington State by becoming a monthly supporter ([link removed]) ?

Sincerely,
Kyra Doubek
Executive Director

Program Updates
Our goal this upcoming fall at Washington Trafficking Prevention is to deliver prevention education to youth throughout Western Washington. Young people are using the internet for school assignments as well as for social connection.

It is more important - now more than ever to ensure that students are being safe when they are online.

Empowered U ([link removed]) , is a virtual program for middle and high school students. We have open enrollment beginning on September 21st. These virtual sessions will be offered every Tuesday after school.

August Program Highlights:
Last month, WTP was invited to present at the Summer Institute Training organized by high school students from the organization Gender Orientation Violence Awareness and Advocacy ([link removed]) (GOVAA) ([link removed]) . A large group of students learned about how gender stereotypes impact systems of exploitation, and students left with the tools and resources to prevent exploitation in their communities through being active bystanders.
"I found aspects such as intersectionality, intervention and the ways in which exploitation can show up as very informational.”
-Summer Institute Training Attendee

Coalitions Against Trafficking
Pierce County Coalition Against Trafficking (PCCAT)

PCCAT recently hosted a member of the Tacoma School Board to discuss the issue of exploitation and equity within Tacoma, as well as their hopes for the near future. They were invited to table at the Washington State Fair but due to concerns around COVID-19, they have opted to skip the invitation and as such, the September PCCAT meeting has been cancelled. However, PCCAT meetings will resume again in October and are held virtually on the third Thursday of every month from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Thurston County Coalition Against Trafficking (TCCAT)
TCCAT is busy planning their fall event which will focus on awareness and recruitment of more Coalition members. We plan on this taking place during November so look out for further updates in the near future! With that, TCCAT is looking for volunteers to fill positions so if you are interested please reach out to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) . TCCAT is still meeting virtually on the second Thursday of every month from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
