Trigger Warning: Domestic Violence. If this email could be triggering to you, please don’t feel any pressure to read further. I see you, I hear you, I am fighting for you.
John,
I grew up in a home where there was domestic violence. I can remember the fear in my mom's eyes and the bruises on her face. I also remember that all the systems that were supposed to protect us failed us instead.
This month marks 27 years since the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) first passed. It was landmark legislation that protected women and survivors of domestic violence. And because of Republican opposition, it expired under Trump's watch.
It didn't have to be this way. There could have been a bipartisan vote to renew VAWA -- an issue that shouldn't be partisan in the first place. But instead, Mike Garcia voted against helping women who have been assaulted and stalked. He voted against trying to prevent that violence in the first place. He voted against expanding services for survivors and combating sexual violence on college campuses.
Every day the Senate waits to reauthorize VAWA is a day that puts survivors and potential victims at risk. It is irresponsible and unethical to do nothing.
We must act immediately. If you're with me, sign the petition today in support of survivors across the country and demand that Congress renew the Violence Against Women Act.

VAWA specifically allocated money to victims' services so that survivors of violence could access everything from therapy to safe housing -- but when the Senate failed to reauthorize it in 2019, they largely cut off the resources so many of these women count on.
Their failure to get to work is putting millions of people in harm's way -- and that's personal to me.
The women in our district are business leaders, elected officials, teachers, students, wives, mothers, daughters, and friends. They deserve protection and safeguards that allow them to do their jobs, learn in school, raise their kids, and live their lives without being worried about their safety.
I will stand up for each and every constituent when I'm in Congress, and I can promise you I will vote to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.
Join me in demanding Congress pass this critical legislation. It's way past time.
Thank you for supporting what's right.
-- Christy
