Hello!

If thereā€™s one thing Iā€™ve learned over my past 11 years with The Humane League, itā€™s that change is good and healthy. After all, you and I are changemakersā€”never accepting the status quo as ā€˜the way it ought to be.ā€™ Our collective willingness to adapt, to grow, and to campaign against bigger and bigger corporations has shaped this organization into the strong, global force it is today.Ā

A few weeks ago, we shared with you that four major retailers in the US promised to end some of the worst abuses of chickens raised for meat. And just last week, we announced the largest cage-free policy to date, put out by the worldā€™s largest restaurant company Yum! Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, The Habit Burger Grill)ā€”thanks to the combined campaigning of 77 animal protection groups who are part of the Open Wing Alliance! When I joined The Humane League 11 years ago, our tiny team of grassroots activists could only dream about such monumental change for animals.

From this place of strength, and with deep trust in you and our team, I have decided itā€™s time to lean into this change againā€”to make space for other leaders at The Humane League who can best guide our next phase of growth and impact.Ā

Early next year, in 2022, I will be handing over the role of President to our current UK Managing Director, Vicky Bond, who will be moving to the US to lead THL through our next chapter.Ā

Iā€™ve had the privilege of working alongside Vicky for the past five years as she grew THL UK from the ground up, building a team that has secured win after win for the animals in Europe. Iā€™ve witnessed her strengths as an organizational and coalition leader within the animal protection movement, and Iā€™ve seen her skills first-hand as a manager, strategist, and animal welfare scientist. Vicky is also a wonderful humanā€”caring, kind, and compassionate with a sharp sense of humor. As her start date inches closer, she will be popping in to say hello and introduce herself to you.

In the meantime, I am here and remain as determined as ever to achieve great wins for the animals as we continue to make progress toward our shared mission to end the abuse of animals raised for food.

Thank you for being by our side as a changemaker! It is because of your steadfast support that I am confident that the next chapter of The Humane League will be extraordinary.Ā

For the animals always,

David Coman-Hidy
President

P.S. You may be wondering where Iā€™m going next. Now that I confidently know THL will be in strong, safe, and capable hands, Iā€™m beginning to consider my specific next steps. One thing is for sure: I will remain a part of the animal protection movement and THLā€™s community, including possibly joining our volunteer board of directors (pending their vote). I can't wait to see what change we create together in my future role as a changemaker, just like you!

P.P.S. Have any questions for me about next yearā€™s leadership transition? Please reply to this emailā€”weā€™re here to support. Your partnership and trust matter a great deal to me.
