On August 24, the House passed the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, a critical piece of legislation designed to protect our sacred right to vote.
As GOP-controlled state legislatures across the country pass cynical bills to undermine voting, we must do everything possible to ensure the Senate takes action to advance this bill to President Biden’s desk so it can become law.
Senators return from their August recess this week and are slated to take up voting rights in the days ahead. That means we don’t have much time to make our voices heard.

Unfortunately, we cannot count on the ultra-conservative Supreme Court to do the right thing. This Court has been all too willing to shred well-established precedents that protect fundamental rights like voting.
If the highest court in the land won’t use existing law to defend the cornerstone of our democracy — the right to vote—then Congress must step up and pass a new law that makes the imperative of upholding this fundamental right crystal clear, now and for years to come.
