Exactly one week ago, the Department of Homeland Security’s “public charge” rule was set to go into effect. However, in a major victory for immigrant communities, Federal Judges in New York and several other states, issued nationwide injunctions, temporarily blocking this xenophobic attack on working class immigrants.
Through the tireless work of our coalition members, allies, and advocates nationwide, the "public charge" rule has NOT changed as of now. We've been fighting "public charge" tooth and nail since it was announced last year, and this is a huge win for our immigrant communities!
Although the public charge rule has not changed, we know the fight isn't over. We still have work to do to make sure our communities know that the changes to the public charge rule are not in effect and community members should stay enrolled in their public benefits. If folks have concerns about immigration and benefits use, they can call the New Americans Hotline: (1-800-566-7636).
It's important to stay informed and to share accurate information about the rule now that it's been blocked. We'll be updating our informational materials, which will be available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Bengali, Hindi, Haitian Creole, Arabic and French on our website soon.
We won this fight in the battle to defeat this classist, anti-immigrant rule, and together, we'll keep fighting to preserve the American Dream for all immigrants—not just the white and the wealthy.
In solidarity,
Claudia Calhoon
Senior Director of Immigrant Integration Policy
