Dear John, September 1st marked the start of Childhood Cancer Prevention Month. Last September 23rd, the American Sustainable Business Council and other collaborators in the Childhood Cancer Prevention Initiative (CCPI) launched the Childhood Cancer: Cross-Sector Strategies for Prevention report, wherein CCPI’s cross-sector team of scientists, health and business leaders described increasing rates of cancer among children and adolescents that could not be due to genetics alone. According to the report, between 1975 and 2017, incidence rates among those under the age of 20 increased by 34 percent. Sadly, today this upward trend continues; new data from 2018 from the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance Program shows that this number now has increased to 41 percent. The anniversary of the release of the report provides an opportunity to lift up the science, experiences, and actions of the past year and across sectors represented by CCPI leaders and participating organizations. Sessions will deep-dive into topics such as the role of business in prevention, the latest health and science around pesticides, cancer cure and prevention, the cancer community, and community-based solutions from grassroots advocates taking action to prevent childhood cancers where they live. Session attendees are encouraged to attend the overview panel which will highlight key data featured in the report, an overview of the latest data trends, and review relevant activities, policies, and bills.
