October 22, 2019: Over the 12 months ending September 30, Netflix spent $13.5 billion to produce original content for its streaming service.[1]

The company hopes the programming will attract enough new subscribers to cover the cost of all that production. But they’re not there yet. Netflix lost $2.9 billion during those last 12 months.

Adding to the company’s challenge in the coming year will be competition from both Disney and Apple. Both companies are launching new streaming services on their own.
