Good morning – Now that the Biden Administration is requiring all executive-branch federal employees and people working for “large” companies to take COVID-19 shots, pressure has increased for all private employers to do the same. That’s the background for the One Click Survey at the end of today's Texas Minute.
As Paxton Fights Mask Mandates…
- With dozens of school boards instituting mask mandates, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is filing suit. Griffin White has the details.
- Paxton has now filed seven lawsuits against Texas school districts that he says violated state law and Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive orders by implementing mask and vaccine mandates.
… Is Abbott Surrendering?
- Gov. Greg Abbott has suddenly gone silent on the issue of school mask mandates. While he put the issue on his agenda for the second special session, it is curiously absent from the third session that starts next week. Jacob Asmussen has the details.
- With the 2022 elections on the horizon and Texas Democrats again angling for a purple state, Sydnie Henry finds the rumors of a Republican downfall may be exaggerated – but not without some merit.
- The Republican Party has maintained control of the Texas government for nearly 20 years, so many Democrats are anxious to regain their power. Yet for all their posturing, Democrats do not yet have a viable candidate for the 2022 gubernatorial election.

Federal Money Pushing CRT?
- In a new commentary, education analyst Carole Hornsby Haynes explains how federal grants aimed at “re-opening” schools following the COVID-19 shutdowns could contain a Trojan horse for critical race theory.
- “Though the purposes of [the American Rescue Plan 2021] to reopen schools and deal with learning losses sound innocent, this is a Trojan horse. Critical race theory is being pushed into public schools through federal grant mandates.” – Carole Hornsby Haynes
Of the $12.4 billion in American Rescue Plan 2021 money coming into Texas schools, at least $2.48 billion “must be allocated toward the SEL (social emotional learning)/CRT with ‘therapy for White educators’ programs.”

Today In HistoryOn Sept. 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that would eventually be renamed, set to music, and proclaimed the national anthem. He wrote “The Defense of Fort M’Henry” after watching the British fail to destroy Fort McHenry in Maryland during the War of 1812.
“O! say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there —
O! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?”
– Francis Scott Key
