Dear John
Today marks the second reading of the anti-democratic Police,
Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill in the House of Lords.
The Bill, which clamps down on the right to protest and gives the
Home Secretary sweeping new powers, is an attack on our hard-won
freedoms and goes against the principles we ought to value in
a democracy. If you still want the right to peacefully
demonstrate, you must help us stop this Bill.
The Policing Bill is just a part of
the Government’s broader anti-democratic
agenda.
The Elections Bill, for example,
would allow cabinet ministers to decide who can and
cannot campaign during an
election. Proposed reforms to judicial review would make it
harder for our courts to scrutinise Government
decisions. The Dissolution
and Calling of Parliaments Bill (currently in the committee stage)
would also make it easier for the party in Government
to call an election when it suits them.
Adding your name to the petition
will show the Lords there is public support for them to overhaul the
Policing Bill. The government shouldn’t be able to silence its
critics. Add your name to save our right to protest.
We are living through an era where
the Government is all too happy to weaken our democracy before our
eyes. This blatant power grab must be stopped in its tracks.
Will you show your support for our campaign for better
democracy by signing the petition below?
Best wishes,
Naomi Smith CEO, Best for Britain
