Tomorrow, California will decide through a recall election if Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom will remain in office. In the last 20 years, this is the second recall election in the state and brings with it several nationwide political implications.
National Political Consequences
- Republican mobilization: Newsom's opponents received 1.7 million signatures, 200,000 over the 1.5 required for a spot on the ballot. California Republicans have spoken and are demanding change in the state.
- Senate control could be jeopardized: Democrats control the Senate by narrow margins. The CA governor has the power to appoint a U.S. senator if there is a vacancy.
- Biden's Pull: The president is campaigning for Newsom today. If Newsom loses, Biden's spiraling approval rating could take an additional hit.
How will a winner be decided?
There are two questions on the ballot that were mailed to 22 million registered voters. First, should Newsom be recalled? Second, who should replace him? If a majority votes "yes" on Question 2, Newsom will be recalled.
Who is on the ballot to replace Newsom?
There are 24 Republicans and 9 Democrats on the ballot. The leading replacement contender is Republican Larry Elder.
