On this day in 1994, we joined then Senator Joe Biden in helping pass an assault weapons ban. And for 10 years, it saved lives. But since 2004, cities have been tormented by gunmen armed with weapons of war.
Congress let the ban expire because of the deadly efforts of the NRA. Now, AR-15 assault weapons are consistently the weapon of choice for mass shooters for a reason: They are designed for mass destruction — to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.
The United States must ban assault weapons – like New Zealand did just weeks after the mass shooting in Christchurch. Like Canada did weeks after the worst mass shooting in their country’s history. The NRA and its bought-and-paid-for politicians have blocked us for years, but we finally have gun safety champions in the White House and Congress. Now, we just need to urge them to act.
