DSA-LA Electoral Endorsements Have Begun!

Beginning with Los Angeles Council District 13, our chapter membership will soon begin voting on endorsements in 2022 races across the County.

The Electoral Committee has received an endorsement petition for Los Angeles City Council Candidate and DSA-LA member Hugo Soto-Martinez. Running for Council District 13 in 2022, Soto-Martinez is seeking endorsement from our chapter, and this decision will be made by our chapter membership via a membership vote.

LA City Council Disrict 13 is unique among upcoming elections. The district has hundreds of dues paying DSA-LA members within its boundaries, almost twice as many as the next City Council seat to be contested. This is a race where our chapter could play a huge, visible role, if we so decide.

All DSA-LA members in good standing are invited to join the Electoral Politics committee in an open forum with the candidate on September 25th, from 3-4:30pm via Zoom. The forum will feature an open discussion and Q/A period with the candidate, a summary briefing of the race and district, and a recommendation from the ElPol Committee. The event will conclude with closed deliberation among our membership, after which balloting will begin on the endorsement question.

Join your comrades on September 25th at 3pm to decide on the first phase of our chapter’s electoral work. RSVP at DSA-LA Candidate Forum – DSA Los Angeles 1. For those unable to join the forum, a space for statements and questions to the candidate will be made available beforehand.

We’ll be meeting at Stoner Park to hear updates from our Strike Solidarity and Neighborhood Mapping Working Groups to discuss how we can support comrades at UCLA who will be going on strike this fall.

Neighborhood Meetings are part of DSA-LA’s Neighborhood Solidarity Program—our chapter’s campaign to strengthen and grow socialist organization by uniting with our neighbors through tenant organizing, mutual aid work, and political study. This and all other West LA & Westwood Neighborhood Meetings are open to new and long-time comrades who live in Westwood and the greater West LA area, including: Sawtelle, Century City, Bel-Air, and Brentwood.

Continuing our study of Class Struggle and Socialist Strategy across different terrains, our study topic for this meeting will be Socialist Propaganda and Consciousness Raising. Short recommended readings to ground the discussion are included below.

  • 5-page excerpt from “How can the left win?” (Seymour, 2011). Written in the wake of the 2008 global recession, Seymour’s discussion of the role of ‘common sense’ and ideological struggles that “prepare the preconditions for more militant forms of combat” can lend lessons for our work as socialists today, who strive to articulate, build, and fight for a new politics in response to the current health and economic crisis.
  • 14-page excerpt from “Raising Consciousness at the Workplace; Anglos, Mexicans, and the Founding of the Los Angeles CIO, 1933 – 1938” Chapter 6 from John Laslett’s Sunshine was Never Enough: Los Angeles Workers, 1880–2010 (2012)

Mutual Aid’s “Give Red” Project Meeting

Sunday, September 19 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join the Mutual Aid Committee in a discussion of our Give Red project proposal. As proposed, this project has two aims: to provide regular blood donations that save countless lives across our city, and to build strategic coalitions and partnerships to put pressure on institutions to get rid of the FDA’s arbitrary and homophobic and transphobic blood donation restrictions. But to do any of this, we need your help!

We have formulated a draft of our Give Red fact sheet. We are still working on condensing and finalizing the information presented in the Fact Sheet and will send out the fact sheet to other committees/subcommittees for feedback.

Right now our next blood drive signup is open through the end of the month, click here to sign up!
