Tell Congress to help families meet the rising costs of raising children and invest in their future! In July, families started receiving monthly payments of up to $300 per child under 18 as part of a historic expansion to the Child Tax Credit passed into law through the American Rescue Plan. The expansion is estimated to cut child poverty in half…but only for a limited time unless Congress makes it permanent!
So far, payments for 88% of eligible children nationwide were received automatically without parents having to take any steps to sign up. If you’re one of the 12% who filed taxes in the past two years, but have not automatically received the payments, you can make sure your household information is up to date using this IRS Update Portal.
One of the major changes to the Child Tax Credit is that families who earned little or no income in the past couple years are now eligible for the full credit! Families can use this simplified Non-Filer Portal to sign up. The Child Tax Credit payments do not impact eligibility for TANF, SNAP, Medicaid, or Section 8 Vouchers. What we’ve heard from parents is that the extra money has helped pay for back-to-school supplies, childcare to get to work, debt they couldn’t previously get ahead of, and household bills. Most notably, parents shared that the payments meant they did not have to choose between their critical necessities. Now is the time to urge Congress to make this key support permanent! Every child deserves a chance for a healthy and vibrant life. And every parent – no matter their race, zip code, or income – should have the tools to provide that opportunity for their children.
Congress is working on legislation right now and deciding whether or not to extend this critical resource for families. Urge your representatives to make the improvements to the Child Tax Credit permanent for an equitable recovery from the lasting impacts of COVID.
