John,
The most disadvantaged communities are on the front lines of the climate crisis, and it's unacceptable. This month alone, we saw proof of environmental injustice as Hurricane Ida devastated low-income and Black and Brown communities. Folks were left without power or homeless, and many people lost their lives.
The impacts of climate change aren't felt uniformly, and in fact, folks in BIPOC and poor communities are more likely to die as a result of pollution than those in wealthier, whiter areas. John: underinvestment and unequal application of environmental regulations has led us here.
Clean air, water, and land are human rights, and we cannot continue to treat BIPOC and poor communities as disposable. The pursuit of environmental justice requires action, so I introduced a one billion dollar tax credit for university environmental justice research programs, especially at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
We can't build back better without investing in solutions to mitigate the climate crisis and protect marginalized communities. If you believe that universities should receive tax incentives for researching the effects of environmental racism and finding solutions, sign on now.
HBCUs -- including Lincoln University and Cheyney University right here in Pennsylvania -- stand to benefit from this tax break. As do BIPOC and poor communities across our nation.
Our nation's scholars -- especially our Black scholars -- can be the leaders of environmental justice research if we invest in them. But I need you to stand with me in the work to mitigate the climate crisis. Sign on to support a billion-dollar investment in environmental justice research.
Onward,
Dwight
