Dear Local Resident

CAMPAIGN FOR A NEW CANCER AND SURGICAL INNOVATION CENTRE AT THE ROYAL SURREY

I now send out my weekly constituency updates on a Thursday but wanted to let you know today about a specific campaign I am launching later this week to raise funds for a new Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre ([link removed]) at the Royal Surrey which could transform cancer services locally. The campaign will launch with a public meeting at the Haslemere Hall at 18.00 this Thursday attended by Louise Stead, Chief Executive of the Royal Surrey, Clinical Directors and Surgeons from the Trust and Dr Claire Fuller, who runs the Surrey Heartlands shadow Integrated Care System (effectively the head of the NHS in Surrey.) Other things relating to the campaign you may wish to know:

• I met Simon Stevens, the outgoing Chief Executive of the NHS, to make the case for a new Cancer Centre on 7 June. Simon and I worked closely in putting together the NHS cancer plan when I was Health Secretary, the key element of which was to increase the number of people we diagnose at stages 1 and 2 from half to three quarters, over a 10-year period.

• The Royal Surrey have put together a provisional budget of what a new centre would cost, which they will outline at the public meeting This includes the base cost of building it, which we hope the NHS will meet, and additional costs to allow the centre to reach its full potential.

• The Select Committee, which I chair, has opened two relevant enquiries: firstly, on cancer services, where we had a fascinating session on 13 July ([link removed]) looking at the challenge of early diagnosis, particularly when there is so much pressure in General Practice. Secondly this week we opened our inquiry into the Covid backlog ([link removed]) which of course includes cancer. We will have another session on cancer services at tomorrow morning 09.30 on Tuesday 14 September which you can watch live. ([link removed])

• The announcement this week about additional health and social care funding ([link removed]) (which parliament votes on tomorrow) is also highly relevant as part of that funding is to reduce the backlog in treatments caused by the pandemic including in cancer.

If you want to attend the public meeting, tickets are available now (with a 50p booking fee for Haslemere Hall). The socially distanced event ([link removed]) starts at 18.00 - 19.30 on Thursday 16th September 2021. If you would prefer to attend remotely via Zoom, please pre-register ([link removed]) here.

Best wishes and hope to see you on Thursday.

Jeremy
