Dear John,

According to President Trump, "Medicare is under threat like never before." But the threats are coming from inside the Trump Administration and from a powerful and vocal faction of lawmakers in Congress.

The truth is, the Trump Administration has tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which would roll back important measures that have strengthened Medicare, hike out-of-pocket health care costs for millions of older Americans and strip more than 20 million Americans of their health coverage altogether. And members of President Trump's own party have for years attempted to dramatically cut and privatize the Medicare program, which would have benefited huge insurance companies at seniors' expense.

At the same time, instead of supporting legislative efforts to protect and improve Medicare coverage for millions of older Americans, the Trump Administration is busy trying to undermine traditional Medicare by steering seniors toward private Medicare Advantage plans through confusing and misleading propaganda.

John, it's clear the Trump Administration and its Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) chief, Seema Verma, have demonstrated a decidedly pro-corporate tilt in matters where the public interest should be the paramount concern. While Medicare Advantage plans may work well for younger and healthier beneficiaries, the Trump Administration rarely mentions the downsides of private plans, which are considerable. Medicare Advantage patients are restricted to a limited network of providers, and may not be covered while traveling. They may encounter coverage limits and denied claims — and experience long delays in appealing claims.

Make no mistake, when President Trump claims he wants to make Medicare "better and stronger," he really means slashing billions from this program, privatizing it, repealing the benefit improvements contained in the ACA and neglecting traditional Medicare in favor of private Medicare Advantage plans. That's why the National Committee is counting on your support to help us expose and stop this profits-first, patients-second agenda that is slowly eroding the Medicare program. The support we receive from informed Americans like you gives us clout in Washington to effectively fight against Medicare cuts and dangerous privatization schemes that threaten this program's future stability.

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
President & CEO
