John,
Arizona deserves a real champion of issues affecting women.
Unfortunately, incumbent Tom O’Halleran isn’t the longtime advocate for women’s reproductive rights he purports to be. Before he saw the opportunity to ascend to Congress when he switched parties in 2015, O’Halleran was a Republican. In 2008, as a Republican State Senator here in Arizona, he voted to increase criminal penalties on physicians for performing late-term abortion.
It took a veto of a Democratic Governor to stop that bill (which would have seriously limited women’s rights and endangered the lives of many women) from becoming law.
O’Halleran claims to want to protect women’s rights, but the fact is, he’s one of a small number of Blue Dog Democrats in Congress. These conservative Democrats have a history of voting against funding programs that progressives like you and me consider essential.
Join me in fighting for women’s rights and freedoms.
To truly support women means to support women’s economic interests, because who are we kidding—the attack on women’s reproductive rights is really an issue of racial and economic justice. Women with social and economic capital can use their privilege to secure their reproductive freedom. It’s everybody else who we have to fight for. So, when my opponent weakened the federal minimum wage bill, he weakened women’s rights. By not supporting Medicare for All, O’Halleran isn’t supporting womens’ right to affordable healthcare, which includes reproductive health.
To champion reproductive freedoms means to do more than the bare minimum. Unlike O’Halleran, you’ll find me at Planned Parenthood trainings, and I’ve always been clear on where I stand on this issue—publicly and loudly:
- Everyone should have the right to control their own bodies free of government interference.
- All reproductive health services should be free of charge and available to everyone.
- The decision on whether to terminate a pregnancy belongs to the individual and no one else.
Please help me be the loud and clear voice for reproductive rights in Congress that we deserve and need and send #TimidTom packing.
The rights that generations fought for us to have are under attack in this country. With your help, we can ensure these rights are never in danger again.
In solidarity,
Eva
