Meet the musician, former reporter, and mother who vowed to bring a much-needed “dose of Iowa common sense” to Washington, D.C.

Independent Women’s Forum is pleased to announce that Rep. Ashley Hinson, who represents Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, as the latest entry in our popular series of Champion Women profiles ([link removed]) .

Rep. Hinson is a classically-trained musician and former member of the Des Moines Symphony, who in her two terms in the state house refused to let the big spenders call the tune.

Hinson is also a former Des Moines TV news anchor, who left journalism in 2015 to run for political office in the state. She was elected to Congress last year after a campaign during which she put 60,000 miles on the family minivan, which in effect became her campaign headquarters.

“I'm the mom with the minivan and a mortgage.” Hinson explained to IWF. “I could understand the challenges that Iowa families face every day. And I think that's what people want in Washington right now.

“They want someone who's like them, who can relate to making ends meet, going grocery shopping, having a full-time job, trying to figure out still what you're going to feed your family. Oh, shoot. Now I've got to home school my kids too, right?”
