John, 20 years ago today, terrorists who HATE us for our freedom and way of life attacked our country.
And on September 11th, 2001, they took nearly 3,000 American lives.
But after the smoke cleared and the debris settled – America stood stronger than ever.
It’s a day that we can never allow ourselves to forget.
This week, a federal judge ruled against our motion for a temporary restraining order that would have prevented the government from selectively restricting speech on the grounds surrounding the U.S. Capitol.
But the fight for religious liberty is not over.
We are committed to winning this lawsuit filed on behalf of Reverend Patrick Mahoney.
Many of you are already familiar with Rev. Mahoney’s story, but for those who are not, Rev. Mahoney applied for a permit to host a prayer vigil outside the Capitol on the 20th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
His permit application was denied, and the government claimed that the Capitol Grounds were “restricted.”
But these supposed “restrictions” didn’t prevent Rep. Cori Bush from hosting a three-day protest on the steps of the Capitol, where she advocated for an extension to the eviction moratorium.
In total, we know of at least three protests that the government allowed to take place on the “restricted” lawn outside the Capitol.
That’s why we fought so hard for Reverend Patrick Mahoney’s request to host a 9/11 Prayer vigil on the Capitol…
…because the government does not have the power to pick winners and losers with the First Amendment.
And here, they are treating a public forum with a rich history of free speech as their personal fiefdom where they control who gets to speak and what may be said.
If we let them get away with it here, it will create a dangerous precedent for the future. That is why we are committed to standing with Reverend Mahoney and continuing this important litigation.
I hope you’ll continue to stand with Rev. Mahoney—and with the First Amendment—too.
You and I are so blessed to live in a country whose constitution was designed to protect our freedoms – but as we learned twenty years ago today, those freedoms are fragile. Today, they’re hanging by a thread.
But because of your continued support of the Center for American Liberty – we’re able to defend those freedoms.
Reverend Mahoney’s case is just getting started, but thanks to you, we are prepared to win... and take this to the Supreme Court if necessary.
John, I cannot thank you enough for all that you’ve made possible.
Onward to victory,
