My cousin and I both have Behcet's Disease. It’s a rare disorder that causes systemic blood vessel inflammation throughout the body and can manifest through many and varied signs and symptoms.

Humira, one of the medications I have to take for Behcet's, costs more than $5,000 A MONTH. It’s not covered by all private insurances, and then only after you go through the prior authorization process or step therapy—the “fail first” process insurers insist patients go through before they’ll cover higher-cost treatments. The only reason I can get Humira is because my VA plan covers it.

My cousin, on the other hand, would have to pay out of pocket for Humira.

I’ll give him my medications before I let him suffer or die.

We shouldn’t have to choose between life-saving medications and ordinary obligations like paying rent. But here we are, doing exactly that, while nearly every other developed nation has universal health care that takes care of its citizens, who lead longer, healthier, more productive lives.

Healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. That’s why I support Medicare for All, a policy I will fight for with all my strength in Congress, and I will not allow special interest groups to derail me. Unlike the incumbent, I will not accept any money from pharmaceutical lobbyists or private insurance companies, because I’m 100% dedicated to placing people first.
