John,

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. 2,977 people lost their lives that day, including many first responders, who saw the danger unfolding and ran toward it, committed to doing the jobs they had been trained to do.

Remember 9.11.01

In the two decades since that horrific day, our country has been through trying times. We’ve witnessed and endured violence, division, and injustice. We’ve experienced unimaginable loss, as individuals and as a society. But we’ve also seen the good that can result when we work together toward peace, unity, and equity.

Our communities are strong. They are resilient. Together, we can build a better way forward. And it’s our job, as police, to work from within. We are a part of our communities: not outsiders, but community members tasked with protecting the peace, making sure all of us are healthy and safe.

On this day, we honor those who lost their lives and those who survived the tragic events of that day but have lived with the aftermath -- particularly the heroes among us, who put others’ safety above their own.

Words will never be enough to thank them for their service.

In solidarity,

Lt. Diane Goldstein (Ret.)
Executive Director
