For me, Independence Day is an opportunity to reflect on how proud I am to be an American and how grateful I am to the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our nation.

For me, Independence Day is an opportunity to reflect on how proud I am to be an American and how grateful I am to the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our nation.

As a girl born in Communist-led Vietnam, the freedoms I’ve enjoyed and the opportunities I’ve had here weren’t always a given. My family fled Vietnam in search of a better life, and I’m so glad that we ended up in the United States. I am so proud to be an American and incredibly honored to be your voice in our nation’s capital.

But our Independence Day also reminds us that democracy is not self-executing. We all have to get involved and work to uphold our nation’s ideals. I’m not stopping any time soon, and I hope you won’t either.

But for now, have a safe and enjoyable holiday, friend.
