As the weather begins to cool down, the leaves begin to change, and work schedules return to normal, opportunities to go outside and experience nature can become harder to fit in. It’s a good thing that the Alliance for Watershed Education’s 5th annual River Days event series is here to help!
Hosted by nearly two dozen environmental education centers throughout Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, River Days features fun and safe events, many of which are free of charge, including tours, hikes, and cleanups, that connect us to the waterways we depend on — and we’ve put together a whole list of them below.
This year’s lineup includes lots of in-person events to get you back in touch with folks in your community after we’ve been socially isolated for much of the past 18 months.

Celebrate the tidal Schuylkill River's autumn fish migration with activities including a fishing derby, indigenous dance troupe We Are the Seeds, music, and art activities. Read more here.
Stream Stewards Watershed Cleanup First State National Historic Park, Wilmington, DE Saturday, September 25, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Help pick up trash along Rocky Run as it runs through the Brandywine Valley unit of first State National Historical Park (FSNHP) while learning about macroinvertebrates that live in the stream and how water quality is affected by stormwater run-off. More details here.
River Days Cleanup at Bristol Marsh Heritage Conservancy, Bristol, PA Saturday, September 25, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Help remove trash from the freshwater tidal marsh for National Public Lands Day, part of the International Coastal Cleanup. Register here.
Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area, Pottstown, PA Saturday, September 25, 9 a.m.
Come ride alongside the Schuylkill River Trail with 4-, 16-, and 35-mile options, then enjoy the FREE Music Festival afterwards. The 2021 Ride for the River features a NEW 4-mile Family Fun Ride, great for children and beginners! Register here. Concerts and Festivals Trenton, NJ Sunday, September 19, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Join the 3rd annual Trenton River Days, a free event that celebrates the history, culture, and recreational benefits of the Delaware River. More information can be found here.
Locations TBD Friday, September 24 – Sunday, October 4, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
This event will be held virtually and in-person starting September 24 through October 3. The weekends will feature small in-person events at multiple locations throughout South Jersey and the Philadelphia area. Learn more here.
DuPont Environmental Education Center, Wilmington, DE Saturday, September 25, 1 – 5 p.m.
Join an afternoon of culture and nature, filled with activities for all ages. Free and open to the public! Learn more here.
Lehigh Gap Nature Center, Slatington, PA Saturday, September 25, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Migration Fest is an annual celebration of animal migration held at Lehigh Gap Nature Center that seeks to increase ecological knowledge and stewardship. See the full schedule of events here.
John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove, Audubon, PA Saturday, September 25, 11:30 a.m.
“Planting Parties” are designed to build community while highlighting the many valuable services provided by native plants to birds and people such as keeping our water clean by reducing stormwater runoff. Come grab a snack and enjoy some tunes while planting native plants for birds and getting to know your fellow community members. Read more here.

Educational Events Camden Children’s Garden, Camden, NJ Saturday, September 18, 12:30 p.m.
Join the Camden Children's Garden for a variety of activities to increase awareness of the different species of plants and animals that inhabit our Delaware River Watershed. More details here.
Wetlands, Willows & Wildlife (Bat Program) Berks Nature, Reading, PA Saturday, September 25, 10 a.m.
Join Berks Nature for a discussion about native bats and a walk through our wetlands trail to talk about places that bats could live in our park. Read more here.
