Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

John,

Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

Two decades is a long time, but the events of that solemn day will always be in our hearts and minds. We will continue to honor those lost and those who lost loved ones. We will continue to persevere and make our nation an example to the world of a free society.

Today, I want to take a moment to honor those who lost their lives in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania twenty years ago -- and to honor the first responders who risked everything to protect American citizens. These men and women are true American heroes, and my thoughts and prayers are with their families as we mark this tragic anniversary.

Upon the drawdown of our war in Afghanistan -- our nation’s longest ever armed conflict -- I know that our service members and allies served with honor and a solemn commitment to their mission. They answered the call after the September 11th attacks, and we will never forget what they sacrificed.

It’s easy to get bogged down by political debates and news cycles, but on this September 11th, I choose to focus on what unites us: our shared commitment to the ideals of this great nation.

We’ve witnessed great tragedies and persevered -- and that’s a testament to our strength. While today is a solemn day, I’m still grateful for all the first responders and their families who gave so much to protect us. I’m also reflecting on those things that bring our communities together -- rather than tearing them apart.

Yours,

-- Matt
