09/11/2001. 

20 years later, most everyone can remember where they were that morning. Those of us in our generation have lived the majority of our lives in the shadow of that day, many of our lives having been impacted, especially those who lost loved ones here in Arlington at the Pentagon. The gravity of that day still hangs here in Arlington as we look over at the Pentagon, pass by the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial outside of the building, or pass by the memorial at Fire Station 5. 

Today, we continue to remember those individuals who were taken from us too soon and those who ran into the flames to save them from the Fire Departments and Police Departments from Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, DC, Loudoun, Montgomery, and many other localities who rushed to aid our county. We must continue to do the work to honor and serve these brave individuals who sacrificed so much and continue to do so to protect us here around the Nation’s capital. We thank all of those who have served our country and continue to do so following these attacks. 

Today is not a day to be political. Today is a day of remembrance. Two decades later, a lot in our country has changed but one thing remains true as it did following the days after the attacks on September 11th: that what unites us is much more than what divides us. Our hope is that we can continue to carry that spirit in the work that we do. We will always remember.
