John,
On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, it feels apt to email you about the significance of President Biden ending America’s longest war — 20 years after it started. 9/11 will go down as one of America’s darkest days when thousands of innocent lives were lost at the hands of violent extremists.
In the months and years after 9/11, our government launched regime-change wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and rejected diplomatic overtures from Iran in favor of labeling it part of an "Axis of Evil". Twenty years later, we must never forget the most profound cycle of violence in modern history, and how our response to a violent tragedy begat two decades of violence and instability.
War is ugly, it’s deadly, and it's expensive. Now, we’re seeing the heartbreaking humanitarian crisis unfolding across Afghanistan. It’s a reminder that we must do whatever we can to prevent war and foster peace and diplomacy. That’s why, twenty years ago as the war drums were beating in Washington and the civil rights of communities like ours were being trampled on in the weeks and months after 9/11, we formed NIAC. I joined NIAC so that we can build a voice for Iranian Americans and use this unified voice to prevent another mistake in the Middle East. I remember vividly when Trump was on the brink of taking us to war with Iran; NIAC mobilized our supporters and allies and aggressively pushed back.
But that’s not all. This year we’ve been pushing our allies in Congress and in the administration for sanctions relief and humanitarian aid related to COVID-19. And we are working vigilantly to protect ongoing diplomatic efforts to avert a new escalation towards violence. Our work cannot slow and we must continue building power for the Iranian American community to have a voice for peace.
To build power, we need your support. Can you chip in $25 or more right now to help us build this power?
