John,

Nearly everyone remembers exactly where they were 20 years ago today.

As thousands of lives were tragically cut short -- both Americans just going about their morning and the brave first responders who came to their aid -- our nation changed profoundly.

And for many, that fateful day served as a call to arms to enlist and protect our country.

Marking the September 11 anniversary can be difficult for veterans and other Americans whose lives were directly impacted -- and now, those feelings may be compounded, given the recent events that have unfolded in Afghanistan.

The complex range of emotions veterans may experience can be overwhelming and difficult to process. That's why, now -- more than ever before -- we must stand with our veterans and be there to support them after all they have sacrificed.

As we culminate our 2021 Field of Flags today -- and more than 5,200 American flags fly in honor of our heroes -- we remember the many lives lost on September 11, 2001. We reflect on the sacrifices that were made as a result. And we honor those who serve and protect our country each and every day.
