Hey John,
I’m Eddie Geller, and I’m running to flip a Republican seat here in my home state of Florida. I’ve worn many hats — worked with MoveOn.org, the Democratic National Committee, Priorities USA, and with former Labor Secretary, Robert Reich — but here’s something you might not expect from a Congressional candidate: I used to be a comedian.
Yes, really! And let’s be honest, it’s so easy to throw up our hands in despair when confronted by everything that’s going on in our world (more on that in a minute). So, to keep people engaged, and to keep them in this fight alongside me, I try to find innovative ways to communicate on the issues that matter most. In fact, to do exactly that, I even made this launch video — watch it now (beware the extremely catchy jingle)!
On a more serious note: I’m a millennial. And almost all the other millennials I know share this feeling of existential dread. Dread that the planet is warming beyond our control. That we can’t afford health care. That our parents got the good jobs and affordable housing, and we’ll be stuck working in the gig economy and paying 50% of our income in rent for the rest of our foreseeable lives.
But you know what? It’s not too late.
If we organize, give our time and dollars when we can (maybe write some catchy jingles and make some fun videos along the way), and keep bringing up the issues, we can 1. beat the money machine also known as the Republican Party, 2. bring real representation to Congress, and 3. bring new voters into the fold who’ve previously felt that politics had nothing to offer them.
And I know lists of three are generally more gratifying, but I’m going to add a 4th thing we can do: We can change the way we communicate and win the messaging battles we need so desperately to win. I hate Fox News. I hate Facebook conspiracies that get shared by the thousands. But I think we can use our creativity and our passion to overcome these message machines and win hearts and minds.
With a representative in Congress who will be a voice for the people (me!), we can fight back against corruption. We can provide good jobs and affordable healthcare to every American. We can mitigate the effects of climate change before we all end up living in houseboats. We can protect a woman’s right to control her own body. Because at its heart, this campaign is about you. Not me and not my opponent (don’t worry, Scott, we’ll get to you eventually). It’s about you.
So, all I’m asking from you right now is to go watch our launch video. Because if nothing else, I think it’ll bring you a little bit of joy and a glimpse into a new way of doing politics. Seriously, go watch it right now.
Stay tuned — this is just the beginning. I’m so glad to have you on board.
— Eddie
