John, Monday marks nine years since Officer Bradley Fox — a Marine Corps veteran who survived two tours in Iraq — was shot and killed in the line of duty. Officer Fox had a little girl, and his wife was pregnant with their second child.

The fact that a U.S. Marine who served in war zones was killed on American soil is devastating. For years, Brady Legal fought to secure justice for Officer Fox’s family. We learned that the gun dealer that sold the gunman his murder weapon had made a number of illegal gun sales leading up to Officer Fox’s murder.

But after years of fighting, we won a major victory for Officer Fox and his family.

The gun dealer, In Site Firearms, agreed to major reforms, including improving employee training and oversight and providing monetary compensation for Officer Fox’s wife and children. We know increased gun industry accountability drives life-saving change. Our legal victory helped secure justice and create a path for gun dealers across the country to make similar reforms to save lives.

BREAKING: White House Withdraws David Chipman’s Nomination to Lead ATF After Senators Bow to Gun Lobby

Following a multimillion-dollar smear campaign [[link removed]] led by the NRA and National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), David Chipman’s nomination to lead the ATF has ended. We at Brady are deeply disappointed [[link removed]] that 50 members of the Senate bought into the gun lobby’s lies and misinformation when Chipman was a vastly qualified candidate: He is a tested law enforcement expert with over two decades of experience at the ATF.

This defeat represents the gun lobby’s latest victory in its long-running goal [[link removed]] to disempower [[link removed]] the ATF. Thanks to the NRA’s lobbying, the ATF hasn’t had a permanent director since 2015. It is a grave public safety risk that the federal agency tasked with enforcing gun laws continues to lack leadership — especially at a time when our nation’s gun violence epidemic rages. We know that a confirmed director is vital to modernize the ATF and uphold President Biden’s plan to prevent gun violence. We will not stop fighting to modernize the ATF to prevent gun violence and save lives.

This week’s gun violence prevention hero of the week is Ruth Borenstein, Brady California’s new legislative and policy chair.

Next week, San Francisco will become the first city in California to ban the parts and kits used to build untraceable “ghost guns.” [[link removed]] The lead-up to this landmark legislative victory was made possible by the support of Brady California [[link removed]] Legislative Policy Chair Ruth Borenstein [[link removed]] . Ruth was instrumental in pursuing local city ordinances to regulate ghost guns, which pose a growing public safety risk in California [[link removed]] and across the country [[link removed]] .

In August, she testified in support of this vital ordinance, helping pass it through committee. The ordinance is expected to pass unanimously next week. Ruth’s life-saving work helped spark a city-led movement to combat ghost guns, with San Diego and San Jose now proposing similar ordinances to combat ghost guns.
We are so proud to have Ruth, who joined Brady in 2018, at the helm of Brady California to continue the chapter’s legacy of helping pass the strongest, most effective gun laws in America. We know that this anticipated victory is the first of many.
