All-In for Nikkita Oliver.
Seattle DSA members overwhelmingly committed to go all-in for Nikkita Oliver for Seattle City Council Position 9 election (190 ballots: 109 for, 4 against, 4 abstained - see results here). Every member, regardless of ability, is encouraged to sign-up to volunteer: door-knocking, tabling, postering, phone banking, and relational organizing. Seattle is going to be won block by block, district by district -- and these skills power future actions too: healthcare, housing, immigrant justice, and abolitionism. The chamber has the money but our movement's power is in the people.
Yes, I'll volunteer
Nice. Now that you're signed up, grab a beverage. There's more:
Nicole Thomas-Kennedy Endorsed for City Attorney.
Members also overwhelmingly endorsed Nicole Thomas-Kennedy (190 ballots: 103 for, 8 against, 6 abstained - see results here). A fellow abolitionist and public defender, Thomas-Kennedy has plans for dismantling prisons, policing, and sweeps as well as building worker and tenant power (like transferring resources to the civil side to pressure employer and landlords before costly litigation that favors deeper pockets). The office, today, criminalizes the multi-racial working class from missed fares to raids on unhoused people. The root causes are not and would never be addressed by police, now or ever -- and she's running against a pro-police, pro-sweeps Republican. There's a choice for our class in order to dismantle racist structures and halt the violence of the sweeps.
No contract? No snacks! Support striking Nabisco workers.
Nabisco workers across several cities, including Portland, are striking. The company sabotaged retirement funds, cut health benefits, and wants to lower pay with less time off. Unions and DSA have stepped up in solidarity. So can you: 1) show up Saturday at 11 am at the QFC on Broadway and Pike to help flyer and 2) support and share the strike fund. The chapter has donated $1k and everyone who can is encouraged.
Bylaws Change Listening Session
Changing and clarifying our bylaws is huge undertaking. Dan H is holding discussion sessions on some proposed changes, incorporating feedback across the chapter. Any changes would need a 2/3rd majority vote and quorum to be ratified. Right now, it's being discussed and drafted. Show up Sunday at 4 PM.
Green New Deal for Public Schools.
We must fix our schools and infrastructure, address racial and economic disparities in districts, ensure schools and infrastructure withstand climate change. and reduce carbon emissions. Our children deserve better, our teachers deserve better, our building trades deserve better, and YOU DESERVE BETTER. We can reduce carbon emissions to save the planet at the same time. Monday, September 13, signup to phone zap Senator Patty Murray.
