The gun lobby has spent millions of dollars spreading lies and misinformation about President Biden’s nominee for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), David Chipman. News just broke that as a result, the White House is withdrawing his nomination. Right now, the NRA is celebrating. The only governmental body in charge of holding the gun industry accountable won’t have a director.
The Senate had the chance to confirm Chipman to a critical position in the fight to end gun violence, but politicians in the pocket of the NRA and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) stopped President Biden’s nominee. The Senate is protecting the gun industry from accountability rather than protecting the American people from gun violence.
We cannot let the gun lobby’s reign of terror put our lives at stake: We need to show the Senate that gun violence prevention is what the majority of Americans want. This has gone on for far too long. The NRA lobbied their lap dogs in Congress to add the provision in 2006 that required ATF’s director to be confirmed by the Senate. And in 15 years, every nominee except one has been stopped by the gun industry. The NRA and NSSF poured millions of dollars into fighting Chipman’s nominee and we know all too well that they won’t stop. They’ll spend whatever they can to stop the Senate from taking action to prevent gun violence. So we’re asking our activists to join us in fighting back even harder than before.
It’s time to remind our lawmakers what we elected them to do: Act in the interest of all Americans and take action against the gun violence epidemic.
