Voting Ends in 4 Days! People For Member, The policies coming out of red states controlled by the Far Right are alarming. Jim Crow-style voter suppression laws … the gutting of reproductive freedom and the precedent of Roe v. Wade… As we fight tooth and nail against these far-right attacks on Americans’ fundamental rights, there’s another threat we’re up against that, if it comes to pass, will impact the entire nation with devastating results. That threat is the California recall election – and voting ends in just four days! America’s largest state, and the world’s fifth largest economy, has led the way in vital progressive reforms, especially having to do with the environment and the fight against climate change. The influence California has in pushing segments of our national economy like the automobile industry in the right direction on, say, fuel efficiency standards, is something many of us take for granted. But we shouldn’t. It’s massively important. What happens if that state’s Democratic governor is replaced by a radical right-wing science denier who eliminates regulations on polluters and Big Oil and Gas? This is just one example from a long list of disastrous consequences if California recalls Governor Gavin Newsom four days from now. This is why People For has been mobilizing our California members, reaching out to California voters, and putting out a series of videos, op-eds, and other products to sound the alarm and raise awareness and make sure that every progressive in the Golden State sends their ballot in to reject the recall! But time is running out – voting ends THIS TUESDAY and we still have more voters we need to reach! Please renew with a donation of any amount right now to STOP THE RECALL and keep California blue!>> Polling says the recall of Gov. Newsom could happen and, if it does, the most likely Republican to emerge as California’s new governor would be Larry Elder, whom People For’s Right Wing Watch knows well. Elder is a pro-Trump extremist and far-right talk show host who wants to emulate Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s horrific anti-science, anti-public health COVID policies… who opposes the minimum wage… who has pledged to appoint a Republican to 88-year-old Senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat should she not be able to finish her term, tipping the U.S. Senate majority back to the GOP and Mitch McConnell… The stakes of our largest state, one of our most progressive, being taken over by the Far Right are truly staggering. Look at Texas – America’s second largest state and one of our most conservative. The government of Texas, led by its far-right governor, is disenfranchising voters and dismantling people’s human right to make decisions about their own bodies. If you’ve followed People For the American Way for a long time, you also know that Texas has used its size, via its share of the market for nationally published school textbooks, to push a far-right agenda and revisionist history in classrooms. California has even more national influence than Texas. So aside from the deeply troubling impact on the daily lives of Californians, the shift in political and policy dynamics caused by the far-right takeover of our largest state would reverberate and harm every American … perhaps our entire planet. The far-right effort behind the recall – which Larry Elder has been involved with from the start – is incredibly well funded. Corporate and right-wing special interests see an opportunity and if we can’t close the enthusiasm gap between progressives and the Right’s voters, five days from now our movement and our country could be reeling from a defeat that will hurt people and communities for years to come. We can’t match their money, but we do have the numbers. We just need YOUR help to mobilize our voters and get those ballots in! Thanks for everything you do. -- Ben Jealous, President P.S. Back to the environmental impact of California being taken over by the Far Right … I’ve mentioned high stakes, but that might even be an understatement. There’s never been a time when we needed California’s progressive leadership on climate and environmental policy more. With California’s fire season getting worse and more destructive seemingly with each passing year, and super storms like Hurricane Ida becoming more deadly and severe over time, turning back the clock on science-based climate policy is something none of us can afford.
