Our supporters have a deep interest in the health and wellness of U.S. military members, especially veterans. Our NEW series, “HONORING THOSE WHO SERVED,” shares stories of veterans conquering challenges for a new life — all made possible by VOA and our compassionate network of supporters.

Honoring Those Who Served: Robert's Story

Born in Ft. Bragg, NC, Robert grew up as an Army “brat.” For him, military service was a sacred family tradition and at 24, he proudly joined the military.

While on a mission in Afghanistan Robert was severely wounded by enemy fire, and it forced him to take a medical discharge and return home. Robert didn’t realize that his wounds ran much deeper than physical scars. His life was soon rocked by divorce, job losses, and PTSD which compromised his health and ability to cope. Robert became homeless, dodging between living with friends and sleeping in his truck.

Let's help our veterans heal

His stepdad knew about the local area Volunteers of America and brought him to us. Our comprehensive veterans programs, which provide shelter, housing, counseling, and training are designed exactly for veterans like Robert to overcome struggles and acquire skills and independence.

Robert is doing much better since joining our programs. He’s determined to complete his plan to get back on his feet. And most important, he’s hopeful.

For soldiers from as far back as the Civil War, VOA has provided life-changing services for our country’s veterans. It's thanks in part to supporters like you who make these programs possible. Supporters tell us they donated because it is their honor, or it’s the right thing to do, for the men and women who gave so much to protect us and our freedom.

VOA stands with Robert and the great men and women who served this country. Our veterans deserve nothing less than the full measure of our efforts in their time of need, and we're grateful for the compassion and support like yours that's making a lifesaving difference.
