John --
Back in July, we launched our video series Imagining Abolition in celebration of BLM's 8th year anniversary. So far, we've released two episodes that explore a vision of abolition and how BLM was birthed from a passion to set us all free.
This month, we're excited to release Episode 3: The Abolitionist Pod. In this episode, we delve into the dedication and work of Black organizers working towards abolishing food scarcity in Black communities through community gardening pods.
The reality is that systemic racism is the reason why many of our communities don't have enough to eat or don't have access to affordable and quality food. “Food deserts” are NOT natural, and are a
direct result of discriminatory policies and disinvestment of our communities.
Hunger is a health issue. Hunger is an environmental issue. Hunger is a racial justice issue.
With decades of discriminatory policies that have led to underfunded schools, high rates of unemployment, and lack of access to quality food, it's no surprise that twice as many Black households face issues of hunger compared to white households.
This is why we work toward complete and total Black liberation. A part of that work means recognizing that abolition has to do with our wellbeing and the nurturing of our lives -- at its most basic sense, we nurture through dirt. We nurture through food.
We nurture our souls overall. It's time for us to push boundaries and truly reimagine what it means for Black people to thrive.
Imagining Abolition Episode 3: The Abolitionist Pod explores it all. Watch NOW! And then, share it with your friends and family.
