John,

We have great news! North Carolinians Against Gun Violence is teaming up with Community Justice Action Fund to contract with an organizer in NC to work to get local sources of funding for new and existing violence intervention and prevention programs (VIPPs). Here is our fact sheet about what these programs are and their effectiveness at reducing gun violence.

Currently, we have 6 of these programs in NC. We desperately need more, and for the existing programs to get more resources. These are evidence-based programs that take a public health approach to preventing gun violence.

The contract description is below and here. Please let us know if you or someone you know is interested and/or if you have any questions.

Job Title: Grassroots Organizer for Violence Intervention and Prevention Programs
FLSA Status: Contractor, $3,333/month. This position does not include benefits.

Date: Sept 20, 2021 - September 30, 2022

The Community Justice Action Fund (CJAF), a project of Tides Advocacy, is a nonprofit organization building power for and with communities of color to end gun violence. We were formed by activists and survivors of gun violence to help support and empower communities directly impacted by violence. CJAF focuses full-time on building power and infrastructure to end gun violence in communities of color. We do this by creating organizing and communications strategies that engage and empower communities that are most impacted by gun violence.

North Carolinians Against Gun Violence (NCGV) is a statewide non-profit organization committed to preventing all forms of gun violence in NC. NCGV has been working for more than 25 years to reduce the number of incidents of gun-related deaths in our state each year. NCGV’s mission is to make North Carolina safe from gun violence through public education on gun violence prevention, the enforcement of current gun laws, and the enactment of new legislation.

NCGV and CJAF are seeking an experienced organizer to work in multiple cities across North Carolina to increase resources for or help create VIPPs. The grassroots organizer will work with existing and new volunteers and organizations to work together to advocate for VIPP programs in the target areas. Many municipalities are working on how to use the American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding. We are seeking local sources of funding for these programs.

The ideal candidate for this position will have lived experiences or has been a part of a community impacted by gun violence, be a confident and effective communicator, innovative relationship builder, creative thinker, and someone with a deep belief in the power of utilizing policy to make tangible and meaningful change. This role will have a somewhat flexible schedule, including an expectation for some evening and weekend work.

The organizer will directly report to Thia’a Rahman (CJAF). This organizer will be responsible for weekly report outs that will go to both organizations and participate in a weekly check-in with both Becky and Thia’a to assess progress made.
