California’s new laws are tackling the housing shortage

California’s regulatory regime has earned itself a Kafkaesque reputation for being absurdly difficult to navigate—a contributing factor to the state’s severe housing shortage.

In 2019, however, the legislature passed a slew of recent reforms making it easier to build accessory dwelling units—or ADUs—on homeowners’ properties.

David Deerson details this breath of fresh air and a much-needed change during this time of crisis.
