As Marylanders and Americans across the country return to work, many working parents are struggling with finding the adequate child care needed to make the transition.

I’m working with my colleagues in the House on a plan to provide universal child care so every family and every child has the resources they need to build a better, bright future.

TEAM DUTCH POLL:
Do you support providing families with universal child care?

YES >>             NO >>

To make this vision of a bright future a reality for every family, we need to provide child care to children up to at least age 6. Many states don’t require full-day kindergarten, leaving working parents to figure out care for the remainder of the day. By providing child care through elementary school, we can make sure those children are covered, too.

We also need to give every family access to affordable, high-quality child care -- no matter where they live. That’s why I’m working with my colleagues to come up with a plan that caps out-of-pocket costs at 7% of income as opposed to a flat income requirement, which could leave behind working families in states with high costs of living.

Even before the pandemic, our country was experiencing a child care crisis due to economic hardship, forcing many providers to shut their doors and making families compete for a narrow number of options.

Strengthening the child care industry is key to building back our country and our economy. I’m committed to putting working families first in everything I do in Congress and advancing legislation to make sure Maryland families and families across the country have access to the resources they need to succeed.
