Parliamentary Diary
Dear Friend,
Snake oil salesman strikes again
I hope you had a relaxing Summer. This week MPs returned to Parliament - and what a shameful week it has been.
We've seen the snake oil salesman that is Boris Johnson strike again with his serial commitment issues to the British public. Two broken manifesto pledges in a single day on pensions and tax rises with looming cuts to Universal Credit - meaning the lowest paid earners and hard working families bear the brunt instead of those with the broadest shoulders. Plans for Voter ID to tackle non-existent mass election fraud amounting to voter suppression for the elderly, Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities. Broken promises on climate asks to make room for trade deals despite touting climate leadership ahead of COP26 and the Home Secretary plotting to sanction dangerous 'pushbacks' of UK-bound migrant boats, putting countless of innocent lives at risk.
We really can't trust a word the prime minister or his government says. I'll continue to stand up against the Conservative Government's broken promises that continue to impact the hardest hit among us.

Safer Communities in Cardiff North
This Summer we launched Labour's Safer Communities campaign. People shouldn't feel scared in their communities, but Tory cuts to policing and crime prevention services have caused a surge in anti-social behaviour and the knife crime we've seen in Cardiff recently is concerning.
It shouldn't be this way. Our Welsh Labour Government is putting an extra 600 PCSOs on our streets to fix the Tories' mistakes. We'll keep working with the Police and residents to ensure our streets are safer.
Afghanistan Upate
It's been a very busy few weeks in the office as my staff and I have been tirelessly working to evacuate many families of Cardiff North constituents in Afghanistan to safety.
Thank you to my fantastic team for their hard work and for their efforts in comforting distressed families at such a difficult time. I'm very disappointed by the Home Office's lack of adequate responses to any of the cases I've raised and my Labour colleagues and I will continue to push this.
Llys Faith Advice Surgery
It was great to hold an advice surgery at Llys Faith retirement living in Llanishen today. Lots of issues were raised that I'll be taking forward, including overgrown trees, dangerous pavements and pushing for a bus shelter and seat. It was nice to have a chat with constituents in person for a change!
Canary Craftivism
Thank you so much to Martine from Birchgrove WI for my handcrafted canary. The canaries, signifying clean air, are being gifted to MPs as a call for bolder action to address climate change in the run up to COP26. I'll of course continue to call for real climate action to meet the climate crisis we face.
Flooding Update
Julie Morgan MS and I have been working with flood-hit residents since Storm Dennis. We're really pleased our calls have been heeded to remove the silt build up under the railway bridge which could have contributed to the flooding.
Local residents also expressed concerns about the impact of water run-off from new developments and so we organised a meeting for residents to put their concerns directly to Velindre, NRW and TfW. It was a productive meeting and stakeholders have committed to [x].
Footprints Park Meet
To celebrate the Great Big Green Week and climate action across the country, Footprints Cardiff North is holding a Park Meet, bringing together individuals and community groups to share ideas, see how we can support each other and encourage more to get involved in climate action. Victims Treated as an Afterthought
[link removed]
Women and girls are treated like second class citizens under our broken criminal justice system. Sophie's two little boys are left with a life sentence losing their mother, while her killer faces 2 years in prison. That's just how broken the system is. Victims deserve better. Sophie Moss and the many women who came before her deserve better and the families left behind deserve better.
Voter ID is Voter Suppression
[link removed]
The UK Government’s undemocratic Elections Bill has its second reading in Parliament this week. Let’s be clear - this Bill is nothing more than an attempt to rig democracy in the Tories’ favour under the guise of tackling non-existent mass fraud in UK elections.
It's set to unravel decades of democratic progress. The UK Government’s plans to introduce voter ID are discriminatory. Millions can’t afford the privilege of carrying photo ID and this Bill risks denying them their democratic right to vote - in particular the elderly, low income and Black, Asian and ethnic minority voters.
This pointless policy is set to cost millions of taxpayers’ money at every election. Never in British history has an election been undermined due to mass fraud, so how can the UK Government justify spending millions on this instead of bringing fair funding to Wales to give our public sector workers the pay rise they deserve, or reversing their own brutal cuts to policing and vital services that undermine the safety of our communities.

Universal Credit Uplift is a Lifeline
The £20 Universal Credit uplift has been a lifeline for over 5,000 families in Cardiff North.
For them, it might mean the difference between coping & being cut adrift. I had planned on voting to cancel the cut to Universal Credit this week in Labour's Opposition Day Debate before it was cancelled. The UK Govt must urgently reconsider and I'll keep working with colleagues on this important issue.
Broken Promises on Climate
My Comments to BBC ([link removed])
This week the UK Government has been rightly criticised for dropping climate asks in the pursuit of trade deals. COP26 should be the pivotal moment we see bold climate action and as the Summit's host, the UK Government should be leading that charge. Dropping climate commitments for trade deals is a shocking dereliction of duty to the climate crisis we face.
This is not climate leadership and this is make or break.
Here in Wales, we've been punching above our weight when it comes to climate and it's fantastic to see many looking to Wales as an example on climate action. But there's still more to be done to rise to the scale of the crisis we face. Listen to my interview with BBC Radio Wales below.

Macmillan Coffee Morning
Pleased to join the Macmillan coffee morning in Parliament this week and show my support for our cancer care workforce. It was moving to hear the challenges nurses face delivering vital care to those living with cancer during the pandemic. Thank you for everything you do!
As always, please get in touch with your feedback!
