Jack xxxxxx, the first thing you need to know is that Texas Republicans are worse than they’ve ever been.
Republicans in Texas have never been more extreme in their attacks on our rights and liberties, or less committed to democracy. It’s not just in your head: they have functionally outlawed abortion access, they have worked to erase history in our schools, they have stood in the way of public health officials again and again.
The other thing you need to know is that we still are closer than ever to flipping Texas.
Texas came as close to turning blue in 2020 as Georgia did in 2016. Joe Biden got more votes in Texas than he did in New York. More Texans disapprove of Greg Abbott than approve of him - a recent poll found him underwater by nine points in the next election.
I’ll admit that history tells us that 2022 could be a tough year for Democrats. But we’ve never had a Republican party this extreme, and we need to fight like we can win because this next election will be unlike any other in history.
If you’re feeling despair, or frustration right now, I want to share with you the vision for organizing in Texas that drives our work. It’s what keeps me grounded in times like these.
It comes down to 4 principles.
-
Every vote in every election builds a foundation for victory, no matter the result. As soon as someone votes Democratic for the first time, they are extremely likely to vote for Democrats again. That means that every election, even the hard ones that we lose, is an opportunity to build momentum for when we ultimately turn Texas blue for good. Every door we knock, every phone call we connect brings us one step closer, even in elections that don’t go our way.
-
Amazing new candidates can transform Texas. Texas Democrats have an amazing number of new young leaders that are challenging Republicans in ways they’ve never had to deal with before. We need more of them. We need to show potential candidates that there is a motivated, well-trained army of volunteers that are just waiting to throw their support behind them so that more incredible candidates know that they can step up, and have a shot to win.
-
In Texas, local elections really matter. Winning city and county races can both build a bench for statewide victories, and provide immediate relief to Texans hurting from Republican policies. Just look at how much good county judges in Dallas and Harris counties have done during the pandemic or the impact of Austin’s eviction moratorium: these are real wins that protect Texans and put us on a stronger footing to change our state.
-
National Democrats will only fight as hard as Texans do. We have to lead. We have to show the country that what happens here will eventually happen everywhere. Republicans will either use their extreme Texas laws as templates for action elsewhere, or we will rally to defeat them and rip the heart out of their ability to govern nationally. We need to inspire national Democrats to invest in Texas and fight for laws to protect the vote to help us win.
-
We live in extraordinary times. Since the last gubernatorial election, COVID killed more than 58,000 Texans because Greg Abbott put politics ahead of public health, the economy collapsed, right-wing extremists stormed Congress, a winter storm knocked out power to nearly the entire state, Texas Republicans presided over the most extreme legislative session in our history and so much more. Historically, the president’s party usually loses seats in midterms. But we’ve never lived in times like these. We simply don’t know what’s possible or what the world will look like next November, so we have to fight like we can win – no matter what.
This is the vision behind Boot Texas Republicans. Soon, we’ll know who is running for statewide and local races across Texas. We’re more ready than ever to talk to Texans about the harm Republicans have done to our state, and build the online and volunteer army we need to give them the boot.
Your help and support are essential to our ability to win. We’re not going anywhere. I hope you won’t either.
