Three Stories You Should Know About
1. SEPTEMBER SUPER TUESDAY
Next Tuesday, LGBTQ candidates in Massachusetts, Maryland [[link removed]] , North Carolina [[link removed]] and Ohio will be on the ballot – and California voters will decide if Governor Gavin Newsom should be recalled ( read up on some of the work our LGBTQ elected officials are doing to stop the recall here [[link removed]] ). It’s a September Super Tuesday! Here are the races we’re watching:
In Cleveland, Rebecca Maurer is fighting to be the first out LGBTQ woman elected to the Cleveland City Council ( watch her latest ad here [[link removed]] ). If elected, she will join current out Councilmember Kerry McCormack [[link removed]] !
There are nine Victory Fund endorsed candidates on the ballot next week in Massachusetts [[link removed]] ! All of our city council and school board candidates will have a huge impact on the daily lives of their residents. These LGBTQ candidates will be champions for equality at the local level – blocking bills that attack trans students, passing laws that ban conversion therapy and changing hearts and minds in their communities along the way.

2. WITH OPPONENTS LIKE THESE...
There’s only three months left in the 2021 election cycle, and we’re learning more and more about our candidates’ opponents – and the harm they’d do if elected.
Vincent Solomeno is working to flip State Senate District 13 and make history as the first out state Senator elected in New Jersey [[link removed]] . Meanwhile, his opponent was banned from Twitter for promoting anti-vaccine misinformation [[link removed]] .
Danica Roem ’s opponent in her reelection campaign for the Virginia Assembly told The Washington Blade that it was important to “accommodate both sides” when dealing with LGBTQ issues, claiming marriage equality and LGBTQ adoption happened because of judges legislating from the bench [[link removed]] . As if this wasn’t outrageous enough, he went on to claim that Danica hadn’t done any work during her tenure, ignoring the numerous bills she’s passed and legislation she’s fought for [[link removed]] . In Pennsylvania, Tyler Titus ’s opponent is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Brenton Davis has made extremist statements about trans people and women serving in the military [[link removed]] , trans kids [[link removed]] , downplayed the COVID-19 pandemic [[link removed]] and told the New York Times he “stocked up on guns and ammo” before the 2020 election [[link removed]] . Meanwhile, Tyler is earning great press (like this cover story from the Erie Reader [[link removed]] ) and glowing endorsements [[link removed]] . Tyler will make history as the first out trans county executive in U.S. history [[link removed]] .
Electing LGBTQ people is incredibly important – we know having an LGBTQ voice in the room elevates pro-equality issues and improves LGBTQ lives. But it’s even more satisfying when our candidates defeat opponents like these!
3. THIS WEEK IN OUTRAGEOUS
Another special session was just announced in Texas, and Governor Greg Abbott is planning on attacking trans athletes once again [[link removed]] . LGBTQ legislators in Texas previously defeated a huge slate of anti-LGBTQ bills [[link removed]] – but apparently, attacking LGBTQ people is “critical to building a stronger and brighter future for all Texans.”
We’ll be keeping an eye on this story as it develops and standing with our pro-equality Texans every step of the way.
