Hi Friend,
Our democracy is stronger when more people vote. In 2017, 47.6% of registered voters participated in Virginia’s statewide elections for the governor’s office and the House of Delegates. Voters helped Democrats—including five Flippable alums—flip a record 15 House seats. In doing so, Virginians elected the first Hispanic and Asian-American women to the House of Delegates and the first openly transgender legislator to state office.
But in years like 2019, voter turnout is historically lower in Virginia. Even though all 140 seats in the General Assembly are up for election, the lack of a gubernatorial, congressional, or presidential race makes voters less likely to participate. (In the last two similar statewide elections, 2015 and 2011, voter turnout was just 29.1% and 28.6%, respectively.) This means that high-impact elections fly under the radar, and fewer voices are heard in the making of Virginia’s state government.

With just two weeks until Election Day, our candidates need your help to turn out Virginia voters. Overcoming the low profile of an off-year election is critical to our candidates’ success on November 5th. And thanks to Swing Left, you can help our candidates reach more voters no matter where you live—by writing letters from home, phone banking with the campaign, or canvassing with local teams in Virginia. Together, we can help get out the vote, flip the General Assembly blue, and bring good government to the Commonwealth for years to come.
